Drawing with Colored Pencil: Tree and Negative Space
Follow along with Mr. Deron, but following these basic steps:
Using a lighter color, and lightly draw the contours (outlines) of a tree. The branches of a tree form “Y” shapes. The smaller twigs and branches look similar in shape to the larger branches and the tree as whole.
Rather than coloring in the tree, we are going to color in the background, or negative space of our drawing. You may decide to create a sky with a horizon or you may decide to color in different parts of the background colors you find pleasing.
Try to create transitions from one color to another within the negative space by coloring lightly at first and then allowing your colors to overlap. Let some of what’s underneath show through the top layer to create even blends. Pressing harder will give you a more saturated (intense) color.
Make sure you cover all of the negative space. Letting colors continue from one negative space into another can help create better movement and unity.
